Need a Lift?

Looks like a new article on space elevator technology has been published at IEEE Spectrum. Pretty exciting stuff. It just seems that in this world of billions of dollars being spent on wars and bad stuff that we should be able to cough up a measly billion a year or so for the next ten or fifteen years, and have something to show for it.

I feel compelled to point out that the estimated high end cost for this is 10 billion. That is a lot of dough but it's also (rounding up a bit) how much Boeing paid to develop the 777.

Exactly! A billion a year for the next 10 to 15 years. Really, it's almost, but not quite exactly nothing relative to the amount of wealth spread around amongst the citizens of the US. Especially close to nothing if you consider the long-term payback of having such a facility and the boost to the economy of funding the research and actually building the project.
